Airing the Linnen: Me and the Nodells

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Martin Nodell and his wife Carrie at the Pittsburgh Comicon. My wife and I had tickets to the Harvey Awards Dinner, and we were lucky enough to share a table with the Nodells.
Martin entertained us during the meal with stories of working on comics during what would come to be known as "The Golden Age", and Carrie gave us tidbits about their life together at the time. Being a huge fan of DC's Golden-Age Archives, I enjoyed these stories immensely!
While I knew that Martin had created the Green Lantern, it was Carrie who revealed to us that he had also created a popular character who is actually better-known throughout the world than ol' GL - the Pillsbury Doughboy!!! He may not be as powerful as Alan Scott, but we've all wanted to reach out and poke him in the tummy at one time or another. I was amazed to hear that these two long-time favorite characters sprang from the same imagination.
In the time since, Carrie has unfortunately passed away, but I think Martin still makes appearances with his son. If you ever get the opportunity to meet him, please do! The man is a legendary creator and a true gentleman - you'll be glad that you did!

I had the oppurtunity to meet him last year at the Baltimore Comic-con! It is one of my fondest memories in terms of my comic-geekdom. He is really nice and cool to talk to.
That is so cool. Guys like Martin Nodell are a direct link to the 1940s and the dawn of comic books. They've seen and done so much...
Josh - glad to hear you had the chance to meet him within the last year. I was afraid that the loss of his wife would put a stop to his convention-travels. It's good to hear that he's continuing to do appearences.
You are right Bill - I love reading the DC Archives of Golden Age titles and he had so many stories of working back then - it really didn't sound like that much fun actually!
I,too, met Martin and Carrie at a Super Big Comic/TV Geek Show in Atlantic City in 1991 or 92.
If you truly did spend any time with him, as I did, it was great fun just looking over all his tattered original drawings he had stuffed in an old leather portfolio. He handled and handed his artwork out like yesterdays newspaper and ask,like,only $15.00 per page!!!
Truly a classic!
P.S. Did I mention, that at that show, Gilligan's Island's Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) kissed me...
manager ken, I keep telling you that was Russel Johnson, who plyed the Professor.
