The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - The Last Thing The Monkey Ever Did Edition

Soooo... what did you read this week?

I read an advance copy of JUDENHASS by Dave Sim, the creator of 300-issue spanning CEREBUS. JUDENHASS (German for "hatred of Jews") is the story of the antisemitism through history as it led up to the Holocaust in the Second World War... and beyond. It's a highly interesting, illuminating and ultimately depressing read, and perhaps it will educate readers. I highly recommend JUDENHASS and we will be stocking this in depth when it arrives. The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the Robert Smith reads BEANO Edition

So what did you read this week?

(TRUE FACT: When I was in fifth grade, I bought a big stack of DANDYs and BEANOs at the Sunset Lane Elementary's May Festival from a local family who had moved to York from England. They were awesome and a completely different kind of comic than the familiar American ones I was used to. The next year the neighbor lady suggested I re-donate them back to the May Festival, which I reluctantly did. I've regretted that decision ever since.)

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the We Are Not Amused Edition

So what did you read that was good this week?

I read DAN DARE #1, from Virgin Comics, written by Garth Ennis with art by Gary Erskine.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future is a well-loved iconic character to British readers. Springing from EAGLE (a weekly British comic strip magazine) in 1950, Dan Dare has thrilled readers over the years with his space-faring exploits. This latest incarnation will perhaps introduce American readers to this classic character... and with Garth Ennis at the helm, I'm sure it'll be quite a ride. This first issue is a great introduction to the character and his backstory, and casts you forward into the return of Dan Dare. A great start, and I'll be back for more.

How about it? Anything to report?

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the What Makes Grown Men Cry Edition

That picture just chokes me up... OH, THE BEERMANITY! (At least it's not Guinness.)

Anyway, what did you read this week?

I read UN-MEN #3, written by John Whalen with art by Mike Hawthorne and with a cover by Tomer Hanuke...

This is Mike Hawthorne at the peak of his form, folks... and here's a nice summary from the DC/Vertigo website:

"With Janus Sr. and Jr. brutally severed from each other, the Un-Men-produced reality show American Freak faces premature cancellation — until Cranius has a brainstorm (what else?). Meanwhile, Kilcrop comes face to face with the leaders of the gaff uprising, unaware he’s been betrayed by someone close to him, who he’d like to bring closer."

Yikes! UN-MEN really captures that mid-1970s DC horror comic feel for me... I love it! Check it out while we still have copies, and have artist Mike Hawthorne himself sign your copies when he visits the stores on Saturday, November 3rd! See the Comix Connection Counter Monkeys for details!

So, what did you read this week? What was enjoyable? What wasn't worth the paper it was printed on? Tell us!

My pick this week was GUY RITCHIE'S GAMEKEEPER #5 (final issue) by Andy Diggle and Mukesh Singh. What a great book. If you like good crime/suspense stories like Brubaker's CRIMINAL, you'll love this. A cool finish to a tense read.

Anyway... what did you read this week? WORLD WAR HULK #1 was great, but the real surprise book was NEW AVENGERS #31. If you've been following the Marvel Universe at all the last year or two, you're in for a shock. Things may not be what they seem... This issue opens up ALL KINDS of possibilities and the implications are enormous. Trust me on this one, it's a keeper!

I did try a tasty DUFF "BEER" energy drink, and it tasted like all the other energy drinks which means it tasted like SMARTIES spit. But they all taste like that to me... must be a generational thing. OK, I'm exaggerating... it actually has a pretty good orangy flavor. Try one today! Available at both stores!

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - The My Bulgarian Uncle Was Reincarnated as a Cat Apparently Edition

So what was good this week? I read THE GAMEKEEPER #2... I've already given a brief review of the first issue of this book, but this is really turning into one great comic. Guy Ritchie, of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels fame wrote it... check it out if you like a good suspense/intrigue thriller. Like Brubaker's CRIMINAL.

I read THE GAMEKEEPER #1, written by director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch):

It was a pretty good start, a great action thriller, but seemed to be really short. Maybe it was because it moved so fast, maybe not. I'll be back for issue two - let's see where this goes.

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the Flying Monkeys Edition!

Hello everyone and welcome... have a seat anywhere. This is the Weekly Comics Chat Open Thread, where YOU get to tell us what you read, what you liked and what you disliked. Tell us!

This week, I read THE CROSS BRONX #1 (Image Comics, Sept 2006) by Michael Avon Oeming and Ivan Brandon. Right off the bat, I have to tell you that I'm already predisposed to like Oeming's and Brandon's work, as I completely dig Mike's art on POWERS and thoroughly enjoyed Ivan's work on NYC MECH (with incredible art by Andy MacDonald.) For those of you with short memories, these guys also visited both Comix Connections last year and much fun was had by all. That being said, the first issue of CROSS BRONX has me hooked from the get-go. Someone(?) wastes a roomful of dead-enders with a long-dead cop's service revolver... it may look like it at first, but it's not a turf war gang hit. On the gun are traces of wax and Palo Amargo, a Carribean herb... is Santeria involved? Needless to say, I'm hooked and will be back for seconds. Try it out if you like gritty cop dramas with a twist of supernatural(?).

So, what did you read?

(P.S.: In my search for CROSS BRONX images on the internet, I ran across this fascinating site about the Cross Bronx Expressway... veddy interesting reading.)

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the I'm Confused Edition!

Hello again and welcome back... have a seat anywhere... cuppa coffee? Iced tea? OK, so what did you read this week? One of the books I read this week was:

CSI: DYING IN THE GUTTERS #1 (IDW). The main reason I picked this up was because the (murder) plot centers around a fictional Comic Book Convention in Las Vegas, featuring real-life comic book creators Ed Brubaker, Peter David, Joe Quesada, Greg Rucka and Marc Silvestri... as SUSPECTS in the murder of online comic industry muckraker Rich Johnston! It's interesting in that the portrayal of some of these real live people is less than flattering... in fact the Joe Quesada in this comic is a Class A Jerkhead! Having never met the man, I can't say if this is an accurate portrayal or not. Anyway, the first issue is interesting, despite fairly pedestrian art. Not being a fan of the TV show, I can't tell you if this comic captures the proper CSI flavor or not, but the comic book-related plot was a fun read.

So what's on your stack?

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the Words to Live By Edition!

OK, let's get down to brass tacks. (What does that even mean?) What did you read this week? Anything good? Anything not so good?

Amongst the comics I read was DMZ #10, written by Brian Wood and with art by Riccardo Burchielli. This issue was part 5 of a 5 issue story arc, and neatly wraps up the "Body of a Journalist" storyline. This book is just plain great. It takes place slightly into the future in the middle of a war in which Manhattan Island is a war zone... and a young news cameraman finds himself unwillingly thrust into the DMZ that is New York City. (The first five issues are collected into a trade for easy jumping on!)

Oh, and HERE'S a link to DC's website and DMZ where you can view issue #1 in it's entirety!

So what did you read?

Here we are again... the weekly "open chat" thread. It's where you tell us what you read this week. What did you like? Dislike? Tell us!

I read... next week's WALKING DEAD! I couldn't help it! I love this series and just could not wait a week to read it with my usual stack of books. It's probably about Number 5 in my TOP 10 right now, because it's that rarity among zombie comics... it deals with the repercussions of a world filled with the undead and how the survivors cope with that horrific reality... the REAL walking dead. In every issue, writer Robert Kirkman keeps you on the edge of your seat, with right-angle plot twists that catch the reader completely off guard and wanting more. If you've never read WALKING DEAD, do yourself a favor and try it... it's in the "Next Week's Comics" notebook on the counter. What can I say? You've been here before. You know what to do. Tell us what you read this week. What did you like? What did you dislike? Tell us, please!

I read ABSOLUTELY NOTHING because I'm still on vacation in sunny Florida! OK, I did read the menu at the Islamorada Fish Company, here in the Florida Keys.

You eat right on the water, and the menu is supplied fresh right there on the docks... I had smoked fish dip and Conch fritters as an appetizer, then a big basket of breaded shrimp! Karen feasted on a nice hunk of Mahi-Mahi, and the kids had chicken fingers (what, no alligator this time, Max?)

*sigh* Maybe we should open a Comix Connection down here...

And I am seriously jonesing for some COMIC BOOKS here.

HELP!
