Weekend Comic Chat: Banner's in the Band Edition!

Another week, another fine stack of comics have been read! I enjoyed a number of books this week. Madame Xanadu #15 wrapped up Michael Kaluta's five issue story of Xanadu in the 1940s New York. This story has been particularly fun since writer, Matt Wagner, used this story as a chance to use the Golden Age Sandman, Wesley Dodds and his gal Friday, Diane Belmont one more time! I miss his Sandman Mystery Theatre work. The 2nd part of the new story arch "Solve Everything" in Fantastic Four was really enjoyable! I love the concept of the league of Reed Richards from alternate Earths. Superman: Secret Origin was another fine read this week! For another retelling of Superman's origin, it at least didn't read like just another retelling of his origin. Johns has a lot of wonderful moments here and Frank's art speaks for itself. Wednesday Comics took its final bow this week with issue #12 and I'm a little sad. Here's hoping we see a Wednesday Comics Series 2 next summer!

Of course, the big book, or should I say giant-sized book on everyone's mind this week, is the Old Man Logan special that's the finale to Millar and McNiven's brutal saga of a possible Marvel future! Wolverine fans can't miss this issue and really Hulk fans shouldn't either! I don't even want to say anything about this but other than READ IT!!! Nuff said!

What did you read this week? What are your thoughts on this week's comics? Feel free to comment!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Weekend Comics Chat - Primed and Ready Edition!

Another week, another stack of comics to read! Incognito and Wednesday Comics are my favorite reads this week! I also enjoyed Daring Mystery Comics 70th Anniversary Edition featuring the Phantom Reporter! Reading this special really made me want to see last issues of the series The Twelve! Hopefully we'll see the book return soon as planned!

But enough about me, what did you read this week? Share your thoughts, don't be shy!

If you haven't gotten through your books this week, may you find some time this holiday weekend to do so! Our hours for the weekend are regular business hours Saturday and Sunday, and 10AM to 5PM on Monday! If you do stop by, feel free to start making non-perishable food donations in the store before the big Creator Cookout hits next weekend! The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank got a barrel here for us on Thursday and it's a little empty so far! So please help if you can! We appreciate it, and the folks it helps certainly will too!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Let the Weekend Comic Chat Begin! - The OMG That Book Is Finally Coming Out Edition!

Before I get into discussing this week's comics, here's a look ahead to the arrival of two books that we're all eagerly anticipating! The above image is one of the two covers to Final Crisis:Legion of Three Worlds #5, which arrives this coming Wednesday, July 22nd! Yes, finally! It will be here!

The second image below is a new Marvel teaser for the big Ultimatum finale in issue #5 which will arrive, Wednesday, July 29th! Seriously, who's going to even be left alive when the dust finally settles in that book?

Now for this week! Not a bad week for books, eh? We saw comics like Dark Avengers #7, Incognito #5, Walking Dead #63, Wednesday Comics #2, and this little known DC Comics project Blackest Night and so many others arrive on the new release wall! So there should be plenty to discuss!

I think my fav for the week is actually Wednesday Comics #2! I am loving the big art pages of that book and the Kamandi page in particular is a joy to see! I'm still reading through the hardcover of last week's release of Prince Valiant 1937-1938, and after looking at the beautiful art in that book, I think that if there is a section of heaven for cartoonists, Hal Foster and Jack Kirby are looking down on Ryan Sook's Kamandi with pride!

That's all I've got for now! How about someone else take a turn! What reads are you digging right now? Feel free to comment!

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - The Last Thing The Monkey Ever Did Edition

Soooo... what did you read this week?

I read an advance copy of JUDENHASS by Dave Sim, the creator of 300-issue spanning CEREBUS. JUDENHASS (German for "hatred of Jews") is the story of the antisemitism through history as it led up to the Holocaust in the Second World War... and beyond. It's a highly interesting, illuminating and ultimately depressing read, and perhaps it will educate readers. I highly recommend JUDENHASS and we will be stocking this in depth when it arrives. CLICK HERE for more info.

So what's on your stack?

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the Robert Smith reads BEANO Edition

So what did you read this week?

(TRUE FACT: When I was in fifth grade, I bought a big stack of DANDYs and BEANOs at the Sunset Lane Elementary's May Festival from a local family who had moved to York from England. They were awesome and a completely different kind of comic than the familiar American ones I was used to. The next year the neighbor lady suggested I re-donate them back to the May Festival, which I reluctantly did. I've regretted that decision ever since.)

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the We Are Not Amused Edition

So what did you read that was good this week?

I read DAN DARE #1, from Virgin Comics, written by Garth Ennis with art by Gary Erskine.

Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future is a well-loved iconic character to British readers. Springing from EAGLE (a weekly British comic strip magazine) in 1950, Dan Dare has thrilled readers over the years with his space-faring exploits. This latest incarnation will perhaps introduce American readers to this classic character... and with Garth Ennis at the helm, I'm sure it'll be quite a ride. This first issue is a great introduction to the character and his backstory, and casts you forward into the return of Dan Dare. A great start, and I'll be back for more.

How about it? Anything to report?

The Weekend Comics Chat Open Thread - the What Makes Grown Men Cry Edition

That picture just chokes me up... OH, THE BEERMANITY! (At least it's not Guinness.)

Anyway, what did you read this week?

I read UN-MEN #3, written by John Whalen with art by Mike Hawthorne and with a cover by Tomer Hanuke...

This is Mike Hawthorne at the peak of his form, folks... and here's a nice summary from the DC/Vertigo website:

"With Janus Sr. and Jr. brutally severed from each other, the Un-Men-produced reality show American Freak faces premature cancellation — until Cranius has a brainstorm (what else?). Meanwhile, Kilcrop comes face to face with the leaders of the gaff uprising, unaware he’s been betrayed by someone close to him, who he’d like to bring closer."

Yikes! UN-MEN really captures that mid-1970s DC horror comic feel for me... I love it! Check it out while we still have copies, and have artist Mike Hawthorne himself sign your copies when he visits the stores on Saturday, November 3rd! See the Comix Connection Counter Monkeys for details!

So, what did you read this week? What was enjoyable? What wasn't worth the paper it was printed on? Tell us!

My pick this week was GUY RITCHIE'S GAMEKEEPER #5 (final issue) by Andy Diggle and Mukesh Singh. What a great book. If you like good crime/suspense stories like Brubaker's CRIMINAL, you'll love this. A cool finish to a tense read.

I did try a tasty DUFF "BEER" energy drink, and it tasted like all the other energy drinks which means it tasted like SMARTIES spit. So what was good this week? I read THE GAMEKEEPER #2... I've already given a brief review of the first issue of this book, but this is really turning into one great comic. Guy Ritchie, of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels fame wrote it... check it out if you like a good suspense/intrigue thriller. Like Brubaker's CRIMINAL.

This is the story of the super-hero Flare, who is breaking down physically and emotionally, and his desire to be a hero tempered by his failures in life...
