Two titans of the comic book world to visit Central Pennsylvania this week!

Boy, it's a banner week for comic fans... look who's coming to Dickinson College on Thursday! Art Spiegelman!

Thanks to artists like Spiegelman, comics have moved beyond red-headed stepchild status into a grudging respectability. What’s more, the number of comics being published in a given year — from superheroes to manga to art books to reprints of classic strips to online comics — is staggering.

That sea change and how it came about will be one of the main topics of discussion when the cartoonist comes to speak at Dickinson College's Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium in Carlisle at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The event is free. For more information, visit www.clarkeforum.org or call 245-1875

Spiegelman is best known for “Maus,” a memoir of both his father’s experiences in Auchwitz concentration camp and the pair’s own difficult relationship.
Spiegelman’s talk, entitled “Comix 101.1” will also look what the art form has to offer readers and why it shouldn’t be ignored.

Read Chris Mautner's entire article at pennlive.com.

And also on Thursday, there's Chip Kidd at the Whittaker Center in Harrisburg!

Recognized as an American master of contemporary book design, USA Today describes Kidd as “the closest thing to a rock star” in graphic design today.” His book jacket designs for Alfred A. Knopf have helped spawn a revolution in the art of American book packaging. His work has been featured in Vanity Fair, Eye, Print, Entertainment Weekly, The New Republic, Time, Graphis, New York, and ID magazines, and he is a regular contributor of visual commentary to the Op-Ed page of The New York Times.

For more info, read the listing HERE!

Isn't it funny how they're both in town on Thursday? Wouldn't it be cool if they met at a diner after their respective speeches? And wouldn't it be cool to sit in on that conversation?

Looking Forward to Looking Back, Vol. 7

It's that time again for yours truly to ramble on about upcoming collected editions of comics of a more classic variety! Hopefully there's something here that catches your interest!

First up, if you fancy more Nancy, the second volume of artist John Stanley's work will see release in summer of 2010. Canadian indie cartoonist Seth who has been doing a wonderful job designing the covers for the John Stanley series of reprints and Drawn & Quarterly (publisher) is offering a sneak peak of the new cover on their website. For your convenience I'm featuring it here. There's also a second volume of Melvin the Monster on the way and that listing will be the new Previews that arrives this Wednesday, Nov. 25th.

IDW will be adding to its output of classic comic strip reprints with some exciting new offerings for next year! Coming in August 2010, IDW Publishing through its imprint, the Library of American Comics, "will launch a new oversized hardcover series with what historians and critics consider one of the essential masterpieces of comics strip art, Cliff Sterrett’s Polly and Her Pals." Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics, 1925-1927, will be a 176 page hard cover “Champagne edition” reproducing every one of Sterrett’s dynamic full-color Sunday pages from those years, in an extra large 12″ x 16″ format so that each can be fully appreciated.

Debuting 1912, Polly and Her Pals was one of the first “pretty girl” strips, but it was in 1925 that Sterrett’s magnificent Sunday pages entered their peak period, as he developed a style with distinctive surreal perspectives, abstract backgrounds and bold, vibrant use of color. Art Spiegelman has written, “Polly and Her Pals is a glorious composition… a happy pop synthesis of Art Deco, Futurism, Surrealism, Dada, and Pure Cartoon.”

“Some strips, such as Polly, need to be seen large,” says Dean Mullaney, Creative Director of the Library of American Comics. “We’ve created the oversized Champagne Edition format specifically for these Sunday pages.”

Another exciting strip that's getting the proper collected treatment from IDW next year is Secret Agent: X-9. This strip was begun by writer Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man) and artist Alex Raymond (Flash Gordon, Rip Kirby). Syndicated by King Features, Secret Agent x-9 ran from January 22, 1934 until February 10, 1996, but Hammett and Raymond moved on early from the strip and from 1937 on the strip was continued by an assortment of other talents. It is largely for that reason IDW has decided to focus their reprints on the strips from 1967 to 1980, for in these years, the strip thrived with the most noteworthy team of creators it had since its inception. These were the years written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by Al Williamson, who together also collaborated on the Star Wars comic strip, The Bounty Hunter of Ord Mantell, and their partnership continued until that strip's end final in 1984.

IDW sees Al Williamson's work on Secret Agent Corrigan as "one of the artistic highlights in the history of the American comic strip". Further stating "Williamson's delicate line-work, coupled with a style both realistic and atmospheric, enhanced the no-nonsense story of Corrigan". I think if you keep an eye out for this collection when it arrives, you'll firmly agree!

And speaking of delicate line work and realistic style, Williamson's idol, Alex Raymond, had an incredible example of his prowess as an artist arrive in our store last week, with the release of IDW's Rip Kirby Volume One collection. I've spent more than a few nights now poring over this book, and Raymond's work is stunning. The expression, "they don't make them like this anymore", comes to mind viewing his work and one look at this book will immediately explain why I feel this way. This level of draftsmanship is missing in comic strips today and there's only a handful of comic artists that bring this quality of line, style, and realism to their work. Raymond's art is a joy to behold, and this is one very classy strip. If you're a fan of his work the forward on Raymond alone might be worth the price of admission. I highly recommend it! The second volume is due in March 2010.

The last fun thing I'd like to point out this week references a post I did some time ago about comic artist contributions to that superb purveyor of films, the Criterion Collection, who are dedicated to gathering the greatest works of classic and contemporary, foreign and arthouse cinema on DVD. This time they too have tapped the design sensibilities of Seth for the cover for their upcoming release of Leo McCarey’s masterpiece, "Make Way for Tomorrow"(1937), "an enormously moving Depression-era depiction of the frustrations of family, aging, and the generation gap". This film is number 505 in the collection and will be available in February 2010.

Well, that's that for this week!

Until next time...

Baltimore Comic-Con 2009 - Day Two: The Quickening

Yikes! What a crazy day! Lots of shoppers, lots of artists and writers milling around, lots of costumed people, lots of fun:

Bill was trapped on the escalator for almost two hours until convention hall staff finally heard his pleas for help.

Where's Bill? Josh: "Bill who?"

Finally rescued by Henchman 21! Thanks, Henchman 21!

I LOVE COMICAL FUNNY BOOKS!

The unwary victim.

The anonymous threat!
Was it carried out?

Just another day at the fantastic Baltimore Comic-Con!

Well, that's it for now... we're all pretty beat and are tired of hauling 1200 pounds of comic books around two states. Tomorrow begins a two-day series of seminars at the Diamond Retailer Summit, so there may be delayed posting... we will report back soon with what we learn about upcoming projects and whatnot!

(Oh and this Wednesday, come in and check out samples of ALL THE AWESOME GREEN LANTERN RINGS! They're not for sale yet, DC Comics just sent one of each of them for us to show all of you!)

Baltimore Comic-Con: The Place To Be This Weekend

As you probably know, the TENTH Annual Baltimore Comic-Con will be held this weekend (Saturday October 10th and Sunday October 11th) at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is located between Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The guestlist is HUUUUGE this year and there are many scheduled panels and programs where you can sit in and join the discussions of various comic book related topics! There will also be a first-ever Costume Contest with a $1000 Grand Prize on Sunday!

Some tips from this longtime Baltimore Comic-Con veteran:

1) BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE AHEAD OF TIME! This will save you from waiting in very long lines to get in. Seriously BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE AHEAD OF TIME!

2) If you are coming from Pennsylvania, USE THE LIGHT RAIL! Most exits along I-83 have Maryland Light Rail stations that you park for free at, then hop the light rail train that takes you to a stop at Camden Yards which is literally right across the street from the Baltimore Convention Center! HERE'S the schedule if you're coming down I-83! A train comes along every 15 minutes, so don't sweat it if one is pulling out as you are pulling in... another will be along soon! Oh, and I'm pretty sure a ROUND-TRIP TICKET IS ONLY $3.20! So you would save the hassle of trying to find parking in Baltimore, paying $15-$20 for said parking, and having to negotiate Baltimore city traffic! Win-win-win!

3) WEAR COMFORTABLE, SOFT-SOLED SHOES! You will be doing quite a bit of standing and walking about, so bring your most supportive, comfortable shoes! And nice comfy socks. And pants. Don't forget your pants.

4) WEAR YOUR COMIX CONNECTION T-SHIRT and I will hand you ONE DOLLAR CASH AMERICAN no strings attached! A free dollar! By golly, that's what America is all about! Don't be shy, get yours!

5) Also, ask for your SPECIAL CONVENTION-GOERS 20% OFF ANY PURCHASE COUPON that is redeemable in either store for when you get back home! It's just our way of showing appreciation to those adventurous customers who travel to Baltimore to see us and the guest artists and writers and the millions of dollars worth of comic books and the four dollar pretzels! Take some of that excitement home with you and get 20% OFF your next purchase at Comix Connection!

6) This one is critical: BRING THE COMIX CONNECTION GUYS CRABCAKE SANDWICHES! You must all bring Bill, Joe and Josh hot and tasty Maryland crabcake sandwiches. Or candy apples. Either one.

7) As a courtesy to you, we invite everyone to drop their stuff off at our booth so that you don't have to lug around that 40-pound WALKING DEAD OMNIBUS that you want author Robert Kirkman to sign. We will gladly stash your stash under our tables (WITHIN REASON, FOLKS!) so that you can be free to roam the convention floor without a paper anchor.

8) Enjoy Baltimore and especially the Inner Harbor (museums! aquarium! shops! food!) which is just a few blocks away by aerial walkway. If you really want some fun, take a short trip to Fell's Point and stop in Bertha's for the mussels or Sound Garden or any number of cool shops, pubs and restaurants in that hip little neighborhood. Or pop over to Little Italy for some great Italian Cuisine... I recommend a stop at Vaccaro's Bakery for dessert treats.

9) BRING STUFF TO HAVE SIGNED! Most creators will sign stuff for free or for a small charity donation. If you want fully-rendered sketches or drawings, you may have to wait a while and of course pay for your commission. There will also be comics and stuff done by the visiting creators that you can purchase from some of the vendors, like US! Or bring a blank sketchpad like a lot of folks do and have creators do a quick sketch for you! It's easy and fun and you can build a collection of one-of-a-kind artwork!

10) Mostly BE PATIENT and enjoy yourself! You will be amongst thousands of folks just like you! There are literally hundreds of thousands of comic books to look at, and hundreds of creators to see and chat with. HAVE FUN!

TOM MAKES A GOOD POINT IN THE COMMENTS, SO I'll PUT IT UP HERE:
Definitely take the light rail if you go on Saturday. Saturday is also the running of the Baltimore Marathon, and many downtown streets will be closed on and off throughout the day, making traffic and parking even more of a nightmare.

SEE YOU THERE!
