Tuesday Mar. 4 7:30 PM Award-winning cartoonist and author Keynote speaker will be Alison Bechdel, author of the critically-acclaimed "Fun Home" and the syndicated comic strip "Dykes to Watch Out For (DTWOF)." Bechdel has become a cultural institution for lesbians and discerning non-lesbians. At the podium, Bechdel redefines race and gender roles while taking aim at some of the most controversial topics of the day. Bechdel grew up in rural Pennsylvania and, after graduating from Oberlin College, moved to New York, where she began drawing "Dykes to Watch Out For" as a feature in the feminist monthly Womanews in 1983. Four of her books won Lambda Literary Awards for Humor and "The Indelible Alison Bechdel" won a Lambda Literary Award in the biography/autobiography category. Utne magazine has listed DTWOF as “one of the greatest hits of the 20th-century.” Sponsored by the English, American studies and women's studies departments and the Dean of the College. Adapted from a Christmas story that appeared in Amelia Rules! Volume 1: The Whole World’s Crazy, the musical details the adventures of super-hero wannabe Reggie Grabinsky as he recruits other would-be heroes to try to prove Santa is a fraud. Boasting a mostly child cast (featuring 11-year-old Kasey Perkins as Amelia), the production, which runs from December 6-7 in Marlborough, NH features music and lyrics by local musician/composer Michael Cohen and is produced by Small Pond Productions. Plans to make the musical available to other theater companies are in the works. For more information, please visit www.smallpondpresents.com.
“As editor of the Amelia Books I’ve been with these characters since their inception, and watched them grow and mature over the years,” said Cohen. “Knowing them so well made writing the songs for this musical so much easier, more like writing songs for old friends.”
“It’s going to be a real thrill to see all these talented people bring my comic book to life,” said Amelia Rules! creator Gownley. “Michael’s songs are great, and I can’t wait until opening night!”
The widely acclaimed series deals with the relocation of Amelia Louise McBride from Manhattan to a small town after her parents’ divorce, and her efforts to cope with the traumatic event. Like Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes, Gownley’s funny, poignant and heartwarming stories appeal to a wide demographic, including educators, librarians, parents, kids and the young-at-heart.
The above paragraph is absolutely true... if you've never read AMELIA RULES, stop by either store and grab a copy of the Free Comic Book Day AMELIA RULES! comic book. We like to keep that one in stock all year 'round!
Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS, Jimmy! That is very very cool!
than to look at photos from the big HALLOWEEN SALE at the York store! (Yes, I finally got around to resizing these for the website. What can I say, I'm slow.) Behold:
Ghost of Gettysburg
How the West was won.
I think this kid could destroy me.
Spooky!
Dangerous characters.
I think I had this dream before...
Aren't they cute?
YARRRR!
Uh-oh. Trouble.
Luckily, Lobo's a fan.
Artist Mike Hawthorne and some fans.
Great costumes! Thanks to everyone who wore a costume... I assume you all got your TEN FREE COMICS from the bins, right? See you next year!
I'm sure you're all familiar with the modern classic A CHRISTMAS STORY, so there's no need for me to remind you of the adventures of Ralphie and his family at Chistmas in some indeterminate late-1930s/early 1940s America in some indeterminate middle-American town... author Jean Shepard really taps into what we all would imagine a purely nostalgic Christmas would look like. Anyway, I'm sure this'll be on again around the holidays and you can see all the familiar A CHRISTMAS STORY icons like the Old Man, The Furnace, The Bumpass's Dogs and of course The Lamp.
Well how about a visit to the actual HOUSE used in the filming? Yes, you can journey to that quintessential American Christmas icon, and maybe even meet some of the actors from “A Christmas Story”, like Randy, Flick, Scut Farkus, Grover Dill, Miss Shields, and the evil elves at FIRST ANNUAL “A CHRISTMAS STORY” CONVENTION on FRIDAY & SATURDAY, NOV. 23 & 24, 2007 in Cleveland!
Uncle Betty. Or Aunt Jim. Anyway, best mullet EVER.
This guy looks familiar.
Very cool Golden Age Sandman, Wesley Dodds.
I think he dresses like this every day, but I could be wrong.
Number Six, the Prisoner. Who is Number Two? Wait, that didn't sound right.
A very dangerous woman.
The Unknown Comic and his son Superboy.
Football Devil!
Good ol' Charlie Brown.
Peppermint Patty and Snoopy!
Some wiseacre.
Vader VS. Princess!
EDDIEEEEE!
Olivia sports her new hairstyle, the Shag.
My parole officer. Kidding! A guy dressed like Mike Hawthorne, artist! And he made the costume himself!
I know I missed a bunch of you because of camera (OK photographer) malfunction, etc. Sorry about that! At least every one who showed up in costume got their TEN FREE COMICS (your choice) out of the back issue bins, right?
Friday November 2nd Saturday November 3rd Sunday November 4th
All back issues in the bins ONLY 50¢ EACH! All 2/99¢ comics now TEN CENTS EACH! All OLDER back issues on the wall - 25% OFF All Graphic Novels, Books, Toys and Statues - 20% OFF ALL GAMES, from CCGs to Board Games - 20% OFF!
Bonus: Show up in costume, get any 10 Comics out of the bins FOR FREE, your choice!
(There is the distinct possibility that there will be candy treats available, perhaps Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. For free. We're like that.)
In addition, artist extraordinaire MIKE HAWTHORNE will be making appearances at both Comix Connection stores. See him on Saturday, November 3rd from 10AM - 1 PM in York and from 4PM - 7PM in the Mechanicsburg store. Come on in and check out Mike's awesome work from the DC/Vertigo horror series THE UN-MEN, currently on the racks... it's so good, it's SCARY!
Our old pal and "outsider" artist Curt Pottiger at work on his offering at the annual York Chalkwalk:
The finished piece:
Art is all around you, sometimes at your feet. Art is found in many media, some transitory like chalk on a sidewalk. Look for art everywhere. Catch it before it's gone.
You can check out more of Curt's stuff at his website HERE! (Not for kids.)
